Meet the conductor

   Andrew was brought up and educated in North-East London. He studied trombone with John Iveson and piano with David Ward at the Royal college of Music. Following a year gaining a Post Graduate Certificate of Education in Reading he got his first teaching post with the Avon Music Service. In 1983 he completed a Bachelor of Arts degree at Bristol University. In 1995 he became Head of Brass in Avon, a post he retained when Avon split up and he moved to the Bath and North-East Somerset Music Service. For 3 years Andrew conducted the Symphonic Wind Band for the BANES Music Service. He is currently Assistant Head of the BANES Music Service. As part of this post he runs an after school Music Centre and conducts 2 intermediate wind bands. He also helps with the Authority Brass Band, Brass Tacks, which has performed twice in Symphony Hall, Birmingham.

  Since 2003 he has been the conductor of Cameo, an amateur orchestra based in Bristol. As a trombonist he has plays for numerous Orchestras, Musical and Opera companies in the Bristol, Bath and Somerset area. He has performed several times on Friday Night is Music Night and Listen To The Band on BBC Radio 2, as well as recording Elgar Howarth’s arrangement of Pictures From An Exhibition with the Sunlife Stanshawe Brass Band for BBC Radio 3. He has also performed in various television programmes and one film! He is currently Lead Trombone with the Gorgeous Big Horns Big Band, based in Wiltshire.

   Andrew lives in Temple Cloud with his wife Jane and his two step-sons. He also has two daughters. When not involved with music making or teaching, he likes visiting flea markets and antiques fairs and re-enacting English Civil War battles with the Sealed Knot.
